PERSONALITY
Rilyana is a woman of good spirits and strong--but ultimately mutable--opinions. Most tellingly, she begins Origins convinced that blood magic is wrong and wicked and punishable...only to agree to let a demon possess a child in return for teaching it to her. The beliefs she was taught in the Circle are worth something, sure, but stopping the Blight is worth something more.
It's not exactly surprising. Rili's always been a pragmatic person at heart, willing to adjust her viewpoint when the world doesn't match it rather than hold the world to an impossible ideal. In retrospect, she thinks it's a necessary skill for thriving in a Circle, though she isn't strictly correct; compromise is part of how she survived growing up in a setting that refused to compromise in favour of the things she longed for.
That said, she still does nice things for people. They're there, they can help, why not rescue the kitten from the tree? But in the world of us-versus-them, it's us all the way.
Her morals might shift, but her personality remains the same. Rilyana is good-humored and friendly, willing to laugh about her ridiculous name and have a good time when she can. She's loyal to friends, to the best of her abilities--though, when it comes down to them-or-her, she'll pick herself 9 times out of 10. (Number 10 is Leliana, the one person in the world she can love without self-preservation in the back of her mind.)
She has a sharp, curious mind, as well as an unchecked fondness for novelty. After nearly two decades indoors, snow and rain are magic unto themselves. Living plants and flowers are a revelation, and sunsets still feel impossible at times. She loves traveling, even in lousy conditions, and meeting new people.
It occurs to her occasionally--more and more often as she ages--that this is kind of a fucked-up way to go about life. Surround yourself with enough people willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of their beliefs, and eventually you start to wonder why you don't feel the same way. But it's not something she's looking to change about herself. She's not looking to take on the world's problems; the Blight, and eventually the Calling, are enough for her for the moment.
And trying to fit in time to see her lover when she's one of the most important members of the Chantry (and then the Inquisition)--that's a puzzle for the ages.
